The Impact of Gerrymandering on the Democratic Process

Gerrymandering: The deliberate manipulation of electoral districts to provide political advantage to a specific political party. Such partisan gerrymandering strips voters of basic rights and undermines the democratic process and democracy itself.

Yurij Rudensky will inform us of how gerrymandering is taking place in America, its impact on elections, recent legal actions and decisions, and solutions to this extreme distortion of the voting process.

Yurij Rudensky serves as Counsel with the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University in New York City. His work focuses primarily on redistricting and redistricting reform. Yurij conducts redistricting research and produces scholarship to make sure that his work is driven by the evidence.  A seasoned litigator, Yurij has written federal bills and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Salvador Mendoza Jr, of the US District Court (Eastern District of State of Washington) and for the Honorable Steven Gonzalez, justice on the State of Washington Supreme Court.
